A first-timer’s adventure in Brașov, Romania

When the opportunity came up to visit Romania, I jumped at it. Why? Because Romania was one of the few European countries I hadn’t explored, and I love discovering new places. This was my first trip to the land of Dracula, and honestly, I didn’t know what to expect.

Romania only gained independence in 1989 when it left Soviet control, so I wasn’t sure if I’d find a country steeped in history and a touch of austerity or one bursting with modern charm. The truth? It’s a magical blend of both, and I was absolutely enchanted.

From the lowlands to the heights

We landed and began a scenic journey through the Romanian countryside en route to Poiana Brașov. Passing through charming villages and developing towns, I quickly realised this was a country on the rise. Modern construction stood alongside traditional homes, with a backdrop of rolling hills and endless greenery — it was like driving through a living postcard.

Our base in the Carpathians, Ana Hotels Sport, was a gem. With spacious rooms, stunning mountain views and a welcoming spa, it offered everything you could need to unwind after a day of exploring. From the sauna and snow machine to the outdoor pool and fitness centre, it was a haven for relaxation and wellness.

Carpathian magic

The Carpathian Mountains are something else. Their rugged beauty is simply breathtaking, and seeing them in summer added an unexpected twist. A highlight of my trip was the cable car ride to Yager Chalet, a charming hotel and restaurant perched high in the mountains. The views from the top were spectacular, and the meal — a meat feast of sausages, ribs, pork knuckle, chicken and pork chops — was as hearty as it was delicious.

Another must-visit is Cheile Grădiștei Fundata, a mountain resort with breathtaking views, traditional meals and exciting activities. The alpine coaster here provided an exhilarating ride with twists and turns that offered incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.

The charms of Brașov

Brașov is the kind of town that makes you smile as soon as you arrive. From exploring the impressive Black Church to wandering through Council Square (Piața Sfatului) and walking along Strada Sforii, the thinnest street in Brașov, every corner of this town is packed with charm.

We also enjoyed gelato in the square and joined in the vibrant celebrations as Romania beat Ukraine 3-0 in the Euros. The cheers and energy from the crowd made the city feel alive and electric.

For dinner, Brewery La Mustat offered a cosy, rustic atmosphere with fantastic local beers and hearty Romanian dishes. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day.

A touch of the mysterious

No trip to Romania is complete without stepping into the world of Dracula. Bran Castle, famously known as Dracula’s Castle, did not disappoint. Its dark, medieval halls, stunning architecture, and connections to Vlad the Impaler gave it an air of mystery and intrigue.

Exploring local gems

We spent a day exploring the Valea Cetății Cave, with its stunning natural formations and a rare moment of experiencing complete darkness. From there, we visited Dino Park in Râșnov, which brought out my inner child with life-sized dinosaur models and interactive exhibits.

Lunch at Hanul Bran, a rustic restaurant, was another highlight. The veal, traditional appetizers and chocolate lava cake were all exceptional.

Later, we checked into Mama Cozonacilor, a charming hotel with an on-site bakery. From bread-making workshops to cosy campfires and traditional dancing, it was an immersive experience that brought the local culture to life.

Day in Fundata

The picturesque village of Fundata was a serene escape. At Casa Pelinica, an agri-tourism gem owned by a local family, we enjoyed homemade pastries and tasted Afinata, a traditional blueberry liquor.
